Slammin’ Sam

Last Saturday, Shore 16Cs, playing Newington 16Bs, managed a meagre 46 runs in a 30-over game. In reply, Newington were 5–44 with 10 overs to spare and it was obviously all over. Step up Sam Roberts, to bowl for Shore.

Can you see it coming? The Newington lads barely did. First ball, no run. Second ball, wicket! Third ball, wicket! Fourth ball, no run. Fifth ball, wicket! Sixth ball wicket! And 9–44 at the end of the over! Sensational stuff . . . Richie? Well, Richie Benaud wasn’t there, but he should have been.

In the next over, Newington made two runs to level the scores and the ball was tossed back to Sam—on a hat-trick, with the game in the balance. He runs in. It loops, it lands, it hisses, it knocks off the bail! Got ’im!

The draw is secured. Handshakes all round. The Newington boys took it well. And 22 lads have some wonderful material for school reunions, 50 years hence.
